Vanished Congressman Sparks Capitol Panic

A New Jersey congressman has been missing from Capitol Hill for over 100 days, missing more than 100 votes, with no public sightings and no real explanation — and his constituents are left without a voice.

Story Snapshot

  • Republican Rep. Tom Kean Jr. has not been seen in public since March 5, 2026, and has missed more than 100 House votes.
  • His office says only that he has a “personal medical issue” — no diagnosis, no timeline, no details.
  • House Speaker Mike Johnson spoke with Kean by phone but admitted he does not know the specifics of the illness.
  • The district is rated a toss-up, meaning every missed vote and every day of silence has real political consequences for New Jersey voters.

Gone Since March — and Nobody Is Talking

Rep. Tom Kean Jr., a Republican representing New Jersey’s 7th Congressional District, last cast a vote on the House floor on March 5, 2026. Since then, he has not been seen in public, has not appeared on video, and has not been photographed. Reporters who traveled to his home and his family’s compound on Fisher Island could not find him. His office has offered only one explanation: a “personal medical issue.”

Members of Congress cannot vote remotely. Every day Kean is absent is a day his district goes unrepresented on the House floor. The House has been in session for more than 76 days since March, and Kean has missed more than half of them. In a chamber where every vote counts, that is not a small thing. His district is rated a toss-up by the Cook Political Report, making his seat one Democrats are actively targeting.

What We Know — and What We Don’t

In late April, Kean posted on social media that he was dealing with a personal medical issue and that his doctor expected a “full recovery very soon.” His father, former New Jersey Governor Tom Kean, told NJ.com the illness was “serious but temporary” and that his son expected to be back in “two to three weeks.” That window came and went with no return. Kean also told the New Jersey Globe by phone that he planned to run for re-election and would return to Congress “within weeks.”

House Speaker Mike Johnson said he spoke with Kean by phone and described him as “good and optimistic.” Johnson added that Kean “will be fully transparent and disclose all that” when he returns — but Johnson also admitted he does not know the details of the medical condition. That is a notable gap. The top Republican in the House cannot explain why one of his members has been absent for more than three months.

Still Signing Documents, Still Trading Stocks

Despite the long absence, Kean was not entirely inactive. The Hill reported that he privately called colleagues by phone during his time away. He also electronically signed and certified a congressional financial disclosure document in late April, which showed he made several personal stock trades while absent. His staff continued working on his behalf, and he stayed active on social media. That activity raises a fair question: if he could sign legal documents and trade stocks, why could he not cast a single vote?

Congress no longer enforces penalties for missed votes, so there is no formal punishment for Kean’s absence. That may explain why no colleagues have publicly pushed back. But the lack of a penalty does not mean there is no harm. Voters in New Jersey’s 7th District elected Kean to represent them in Washington. For more than 100 days, that representation has been missing. A promise of future transparency is not the same as actual transparency — and voters deserve better than vague assurances delivered through a spokesperson or a social media post.

Accountability Matters — Even When It’s Uncomfortable

Medical privacy is a real concern, and nobody is asking for a detailed diagnosis. But there is a difference between protecting personal health information and leaving an entire congressional district without a functioning representative for over three months. Kean promised he would be “completely transparent” about his condition when he returned. That return has been delayed repeatedly. His constituents are not asking for gossip — they are asking whether their congressman can do his job. That is a fair and reasonable question that still has no real answer.
