(LibertyInsider.org) – An ex-Trump aide who once served on the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) is the latest victim of D.C.’s rapidly growing crime problem. Mike Gill was critically injured in a brutal carjacking spree that occurred shortly after he arrived to pick his wife up from a restaurant near the 900 block of K Street NW on January 29.
The D.C. Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) has since confirmed that Gill survived the attack but remains in “very serious condition.” He was still fighting for his life in a nearby hospital as of January 31.
MPD officers responded to a shooting call in the Mount Vernon area around 5:45 p.m. The suspect had allegedly entered Gill’s vehicle, shot him, and attempted to flee the scene on foot. Gill, gravely injured, managed to exit his car but collapsed shortly after. Emergency responders found him and transported him to a local hospital for treatment.
The suspect’s crime spree didn’t stop there. Over the course of several hours, he attempted to carjack two vehicles in separate locations throughout D.C. His first attempt failed, and the victim was able to escape unharmed. The next carjacking was successful, but he tragically shot and killed a young father by the name of AJ Vasquez Jr. in the process.
He then drove to Maryland, where he continued trying to carjack at least two vehicles. Local police in New Carrollton finally caught up with him at around 3 a.m. The confrontation escalated into a shootout that ultimately resulted in the suspect’s death.
Gill family spokesperson Erica Richardson described Gill as a beloved husband, father, and respected professional in a statement to WTOP. “He makes friends with everyone,” she wrote, adding that those close to him know “how much he loves his family and how proud he is of his three children.”
Gill’s unfortunate experience highlights the alarming surge in violent crime in D.C. According to recent statistics comparing 2022 to 2023, there has been a 39% increase in overall violent crime in the region, a 67% rise in robberies, and an 82% increase in motor vehicle thefts.
