(LibertyInsider.org) – Russia invaded Ukraine almost two years ago. Russian President Vladimir Putin wants to annex several regions, but Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy refuses to give up any territory. Former US President Donald Trump has expressed a desire to end the conflict, but Zelenskyy has lashed out at him.
Trump has repeatedly said that he will end the war in Eastern Europe within 24 hours if he’s elected president. In July 2023, he told Fox News that he would do it by leaning on his relationships with both men. He said that he knows Zelenskyy and Putin well and “had a very good relationship with both of them.” He went on to say that he would tell Ukraine’s president, “No more, you gotta make a deal.” And he would tell Putin that if he didn’t reach a deal with the neighboring country, the US would give Ukraine more aid than it had ever received before.
In the months following his July interview Trump has repeated the claims. On January 19, the UK’s Channel 4 News aired an interview with Zelenskyy where he addressed the remarks by the Republican frontrunner. He said Trump’s claims that he can end the war in 24 hours are “very dangerous.”
Zelenskyy went on to say Trump should visit Ukraine if he can actually end it in a day. The Ukrainian president said the former US POTUS “is going to make decisions on his own […] but without both sides” without Ukraine, saying he was worried Trump wants Ukraine to make major concessions to the invading forces.
Zelenskyy said that it’s making him stressed, and he thinks it’s scary if Trump wants to try to implement whatever plan he has, even if it’s not something that works for Ukraine and its people.
Neither Trump nor his presidential campaign have addressed the concerns Zelenskyy has or further elaborated on what kind of deal he would like to see.
