Huffman Lodges Bizarre Defense Amid Scandal

(LibertyInsider.org) – Felicity Huffman, who pleaded guilty to attempting to cheat her daughter into a prestigious college in May 2019, recently spoke out about the scandal. The Hollywood actress lodged a bizarre defense that painted her as a desperate mother who’d run out of options and had no other choice but to break the law. She says she takes full responsibility for her actions, although she still seems determined to justify her fateful decision.

People obtained a copy of the letter Huffman wrote to a judge ahead of her sentencing, which occurred in September 2019. The actress states that there is “no justification” for her choice to cheat on her older daughter’s SAT test, but her college prep advisor, William Rick Singer, convinced her that there was no other option.

Huffman adds that her daughter has learning disabilities, which might have barred the girls’ path. Huffman notes that her daughter is also a performer, and the star didn’t want her daughter to lose the chance to prove her acting abilities simply because she was terrible at math.

Huffman places the bulk of the blame on Singer, who was her daughter’s legitimate advisor for about a year. She claims he had been working with the high school student to prepare for college but ultimately felt that her math test scores would prevent colleges from considering her for auditions. Singer had an arrangement with a proctor to correct the girl’s SAT test before submitting it for results.

Huffman’s husband, actor William H. Macy, wasn’t involved in the scandal and has stood by her. Their older daughter was reportedly devastated by her mother’s actions and hurt that Huffman didn’t have faith that she could earn her own way into a good school.

Huffman was sentenced to 11 days in jail and a $15,000 fine for her part in the college admissions scheme. Singer, who reeled in over 50 parents along with the actress, according to NPR, was sentenced in January to 3 ½ years in prison and over $19 million in fines and IRS restitution.
